CASTELL DE CABRES
NATURAL CHARM
Castell de Cabres is one of the tiniest and highest towns of Valencia. From its 1,137 meters above sea level, the entrance to La Tinença de Benifassà allows us to take in vast and breathtaking views.
Its streets bring to light the passage of time and its main square treasures two points of great interest. Firstly, La Font de la Vila, the local fountain standing out for its outstanding Romanesque-inspired arches. It has always been the water supply of the town. Secondly, it stands out its church consecrated to Saint Laurent. L’Església de Sant Llorenç dates to the 18th century, with three naves and three bays and a quadrangular-shaped bell tower. Inside, the highlights are the Baroque paintings of the 18th century, with vivid colours.
The town was protected by the castle at the top of the hill, declared Asset of Cultural Interest. Currently, it has almost completely disappeared.
Sant Cristòfol church, from the 16 th century, can be found only by walking 5 km while
enjoying the views of the lush forests of Castell de Cabres and Herbeset.
RELIGIOUS MONUMENTS AND BUILDINGS
Sant Llorenç church: From the 18th century, this church consecrated to Saint Laurent has three naves with three sections at the same height, cruise, high choir and bell. The nave is covered groin vaults. This combination is an unusual peculiarity in Els Ports. One of the distinctive features is the pictorial decoration of the interior.
Sant Cristóbal church: Consecrated to Saint Christopher, this shrine located 5 km away from the town, is on top of the mountain. From it, we can take in extensive views of the upper valley of the Escalona river and lush pine forests. It dates from the 16th century, but its roof and arches are currently ruined.
Font de la Vila: The fountain of the town is widely known for its beautiful Romanesque-inspiration arches, built with natural stone. Since medieval times, it has been the main water supply.
