Prigó of Sant Roc

Natural heritage

This is a stone cross with a ceramic image of Saint Roch, shaped like a small chapel. It is topped by a cross. In many inland towns in the province of Castellón, such as Castell de Cabres, this cross is called a prigó. Nearby there is another prigó dedicated to Saint Lawrence.

The prigó de Sant Roc stands on the bridle path of Castell de Cabres, also known as Camí dels Carrerons. The Els Ports region has numerous old roads that would traditionally connect towns, such as the case of this assagador between Castell de Cabres and Herbeset and Morella.

Barranc de la Mina

Natural heritage

This ravine is home to a 19.96 hectare Micro- reserve (according to Order of 11 March 2008 of the Regional Ministry for the Environment, Water, Land Planning and Housing). The area is full of wonderful landscapes, stunning spots, and a large number of common holly plants growing under the pine trees.

In addition to collecting and channelling water from the Serra de les Canals mountain range, the ravine acts as an administrative boundary between the towns of Herbeset and Castell de Cabres.

Four kilometres further up the trail you reach the ruins of the Castell de Cabres coal mine, which was operational from 1860 to 1957.

Peiró of Sant Isidre

Natural heritage

This religious construction stands 1,167 metres above sea level and is dedicated to Saint Isidore, patron saint of farmers and protector of crops. This devotional cross, or peiró, is part of the rotllos i primes cycle of Rogations days in the Els Ports region; this tradition was recovered in 1997 and is held on the Saturday after 15 May, the day of Saint Isidore.

A total of eleven Rogation days are held in the municipal district of Morella between April and June, and rotllos i primes, typical bakery products of this area, are given out to the public. This deeply-rooted religious tradition is associated with the ancient rites of fertility of the land, giving thanks for the crops, and brotherhood among the masoveros, the inhabitants of the local farm houses. Participants in the case of this peiró are the locals of Herbeset and the masia farm houses of Regatxolet and Serraplana de la Dena in the district of Font d’en Torres.
